Churchill: Intervention in the Russian Civil War: 1918-1920 by Andy Stuart (a western Front Association Speaker)
For thousands of British and Allied soldiers a very different war continued after November 1918, in a dangerous and inhospitable environment 1000’s of miles away from the Western Front. Why were they in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution? How did this affect the Western Front? Conscript’s ‘soldier strikes’, Officer’s mutinies and why volunteer for Churchill’s North Russian Relief Force? Recruiting from the prisons – what could possibly go wrong? This talk explores a forgotten period of British history, Churchill’s involvement and its legacy today.
2.30pm Saturday 25th April 2026 at Trinity Methodist Church,
Chelmsford CM1 2XB. Visitors and prospective members warmly
welcomed – £5. Booking not required.
We are the Essex Branch of the national Historical Association. We meet regularly and organise a programme of talks aimed to appeal to all with a love of history, from history professionals to people with no historical background at all. Our 2025/26 programme of talks will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, Chelmsford.
We offer high-quality presentations from historians, usually experts in their fields, about their current researches into history. We seek to have talks about local, national and international history, including political, economic, social and cultural aspects, and acknowledging diversity, as well as to have contributions from ancillary specialists like archivists, archaeologists and museum curators.
We also put on other activities including history visits and CPD events.
